Lancers are ready to deploy

It has been a busy two months for the VAQ-131. Keeping the Lancers vigilant have been a two-week at-sea sustainment period; Prowler community fuel-cell test detachment; HARM live-fire exercise; NATOPS unit evaluation; multiple cross-country flights supporting Prowler Weapons TP events and air shows; Prowler Week and increased training and readiness funds from the Navy’s Fleet Response Plan.

Black Ravens patrol skies over Iraq

Four officers from Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 11 recently had the distinction of being the first aircrew from the Nimitz Strike Group to fly over Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Capt. David Woods, Deputy Commander, CVW-11; Lt. Cmdr. Christopher Middleton, Lt. Nathan Schneider and Lt. Doug White, all from Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 135, crewed an EA-6B Prowler from the Black Ravens during the first mission over Iraq July 14. Nimitz is in the region conducting maritime security operations as well as providing direct support to U.S. and coalition ground forces in Iraq.

New tower gives air traffic controllers a fresh view

There is a new landmark on Whidbey Island that is now open for business Capt. Syd Abernethy officially brought Naval Air Station Whidbey Island’s air traffic control tower into service Aug. 1 in front of a gathering of Navy Air Traffic Controllers (ACs) and Electronics Technicians (ETs.) Most of those present will be the Sailors who bring the new tower to life while others spent their time in service calling the shots from the base’s 1954 tower perched atop Hangar 5 near the north end of the flight line.

Shadowhawks complete workups

The Shadowhawks of Electronic Attack Squadron 141 have returned to NAS Whidbey Island to rest after their last phase of work-ups. “We’re back to recuperate, set our minds straight and get our jets in ‘ship-shape’ condition,” said Maintenance Officer, Lt. Cmdr. Jeffrey Todd.

Gray Wolves launch HARM downrange

Clear skies, a summer breeze and a beautiful, calm ocean made for a perfect day - perfect for launching missiles that is. That’s just what a VAQ-142 Gray Wolf Prowler, along with other participants from Carrier Air Wing Fourteen and VAQ-133, had the chance to do during their latest High Speed Anti-Radiation Missile (HARM) firing exercise held down at NAS Pt Mugu, California. The Gray Wolves honed their weapons skills targeting a transmitter placed atop a lone barge placed fifty miles off the California coast.

VP-46, VP-69 join forces

Many people know that today’s Reserves are playing a more prominent role in Operation Iraqi Freedom. What may not be known is that many of these “citizen-Sailors” have been providing support to active duty missions for many years, in and out of wartime. At Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, the Totems of VP 69 have been providing support for over 30 years to their sister active squadrons, VP-46, VP-1 and VP-40.

World Watchers nab Battle ‘E’

Following an outstanding year of operational success, Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron One (VQ-1) was selected for the Battle Efficiency Award for 2004. For the third time in four years, VQ-1 has once again set the precedent for squadron excellence with this award. The Battle ‘E’ award is presented to the aviation squadron in each category that excels in training and operational achievements, efficiency and overall readiness.
