Thomas Litka, Evaluation and Procedures Development specialist, Air Traffic Control (ATC) Division, Operations Department, is the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island Manager of the Quarter for the third quarter fiscal year 2005.
Litka, a retired Chief Air Traffic Controller in the Naval Reserves, began his career at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island on active duty in 1973. He was hired as a DoD Air Traffic Control Specialist upon completion of his active duty career in 1978 and has been reporting for work in the ATC Facility since that time.

Some call it a challenge, others a competition; still others, pure madness. A competition that pushes determination and tests will. One half-mile swim, 19.5-mile bike, and 3.8 mile run—all in succession.
The swim alone is discouraging enough, yet 12 Shadowhawks and family, for reasons only they can admit, accepted the challenge. The idea surfaced in the midst of the Shadowhawks’ work-up schedule.

Several Whidbey Island Sailors recently competed in triple threat triathlon held at Ft. Lewis in Tacoma. The rigorous event began with a half-mile swim followed by a 15-mile road bike ride and was capped off by a three mile run.

The Cougars of VAQ-139 began operational use of the newest Prowlers in the EA-6B inventory July 8.
Embarked aboard USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) for the better part of July, the Cougars demonstrated the improved capabilities of this platform during Tailored Shipboard Training Assessment. This work-up period provided the first opportunity for the Cougars to conduct exercises with Carrier Air Wing 14 while flying the ICAP-III (Improved Capability, 3rd Version) Prowler.

After being on an extended deployment and spending three and a half months flying missions over Iraq, the Yellow Jackets are finally home.
We left for San Diego on Jan. 17 and completed a two-week JTF-EX before deploying on Feb. 1 for our around-the-world deployment.

A Navy UH3H Sea King SAR helicopter from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island rescued two Bellingham hikers from a stranded position on Mount Baker just before dark Monday, July 25.
At approximately 7:30 p.m., the Whatcom County Sheriff’s office called Whidbey’s duty officer, requesting that the Navy dispatch a SAR helicopter to rescue two male hikers, ages 24 and 20, stranded on Mount Baker’s north face. Wearing only shorts and T-shirts, the hikers were on a very steep gravel slope that precluded them from climbing safely up or down.

The Zappers are the proud winners of the 2005 Tactical Excellence Prowler Squadron of the Year Award. Honors were presented at the annual Prowler Ball on July 23 as all officers joined Cmdr. Tom Slais, Zapper Commanding Officer, on stage to accept their award.
“We had exceptional teamwork from all hands in achieving our level of tactical excellence throughout the year,” said Slais. “Maintainers provided fully-mission-capable weapon systems and aircraft, electronic warfare department personnel provided outstanding tactical support for our missions and aircrew were proactive and aggressive in mission execution.”

After a return from USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and successful Composite Training Unit Exercise, the Shadowhawks are deployment ready. At the completion of COMPTUEX, CVN 71 became blue water-certified and Carrier Air Wing Eight completed work-ups necessary to deploy. VAQ-141 returned to Whidbey for some rest and regrouping before leaving home again for the six-month cruise.

According to Capt. Robert C. Field, Commander Electronic Attack Wing, Pacific Fleet, the event provided an opportunity to recognize individual efforts and team performance alike.

The School Age Care program at NAS Whidbey hosts an 11-week adventures unlimited day camp each year that is open to all community children who have successfully completed kindergarten and not yet entered seventh grade.
