They’re ‘first class’ volunteers for local Boys and Girls Club

Creepy spiders, skeletons and ghostly figures lurk in the basement of a 91-year-old barn, and the Boys & Girls Club of Oak Harbor wants them there, at least for Halloween. Each year the First Class Association from NAS Whidbey’s Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit (CNATTU) organizes and sets up the “Frightville” Haunted House in the Roller Barn.

VP-46 celebrates halfway point

Grey Knights detached to Kadena Air Base, Okinawa took time off on October 8 to celebrate the successful completion of over three months of VP-46’s dual-site Seventh Fleet deployment. Commonly called an “Over the Hump” party, the event marks the midpoint of a six-month deployment. The halfway milestone actually took place in September when the other Grey Knight detachment held their party at the Naval Air Facility in Misawa, Japan. The Kadena gathering was delayed several times by typhoon threats and operational commitments.

Yellow Jackets say farewell to John DeBellis

The Yellow Jackets of VAQ-138 said farewell to one of their own on Sunday, Oct. 17. Lt.Cmdr. John Jay “JJ” DeBellis, who served with the Yellow Jackets on two different occasions, recently completed his turnover as the Operations Officer and will soon leave Whidbey for the Naval War College in Newport, R.I.

Sailors enjoy a taste of home

Groups of hungry Sailors gathered in Barracks 2 and 8 on Oct. 4 and 18 to enjoy the simple pleasures of making a tasty meal for themselves. It’s all part of Potless Cooking in the Barracks, a quarterly program that makes a stop at every barracks on base to help single Sailors and Marines enjoy home cooking. The menu of the evening was turkey cutlets and stuffing, with a dash of cranberries for a little extra zing.

Pierson takes command of Scorpions

Cmdr. Ronald Reis, commanding officer of VAQ-132 Scorpions, changed command while operating in the Arabian Gulf on Oct. 16. Reis assumed command in August of 2003 and led the EA-6B squadron through several detachments and a combat deployment.

Two attend desert survival training

Lt. Bryan Gunkel and Lt. Travis Inouye volunteered to attend advanced survival school in the California desert. The unclassified course designed to provide advanced survival and evasion skills to Navy, Marine Corps and other DoD personnel in knowledge and skills necessary to find and acquire food, water and shelter, along with evasion, self aid, travel and signal for rescue in a desert environment.
