Housing Spring Cleanup Drop-off Service — Today through April 29, NASWI PPV residents may bring large, bulky, unwanted household items (furniture, large appliances, etc.) for drop-off to the Recycle Center.

Canadian youth visit Prowler FRS

The Vikings at VAQ-129 recently had some youthful visitors from across the border. The 744th Royal Canadian Air Cadets spent time with us on a field trip to learn about United States naval aviation. The RCAC program started during World War II as a way to teach civilians how to fly before joining the military to support the war effort. Since then, the group has transformed itself into an organization that teaches young people responsibility, leadership and the value of being a good citizen, similar to the Boy Scouts of

Scorpion Sailor excels at Judo

Aviation Machinist Mate Airman Fumiharu Komatsu has a rewarding way of spending his off-duty time, and it turns out he’s quite good at it. After practicing Judo for only three and a half years since attending high school in Japan, Komatsu has begun to compete in sanctioned Judo tournaments. He has placed second in his division at two events and recently won first place at the Evergreen State Open Judo Championships held at the Mercer Island Boys and Girls club on March 5.

Wizards awarded at VAQ-133

At an awards ceremony at the Skywarrior Theatre March 16, Aviation Ordnanceman Chief (Air Warfare) Eddie P. Fry was awarded a Navy Achievement Medal (Gold Star in lieu of third award) for his exceptional performance as Beach Detachment Leading Chief Petty Officer and Maintenance Control Chief Petty Officer.

Bowen takes charge of VP-40

The Fighting Marlins of VP-40 held a change of command ceremony last week as Cmdr. Kenneth J. Bowen II relieved Cmdr. Stanton W. Dietrich. Dietrich, who took command of VP-40 on Feb. 27, 2004, will become Director, Programming Division for the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (N80) (Resources, Requirements and Assessment) in Washington, D.C.

Whidbey Gray Wolves enjoy Space World

Thirty-four members of the VAQ-142 Gray Wolves took part in a squadron MWR-sponsored trip to the Japanese theme park Space World on Feb. 28. Space World is located in Kita-Kyushu, 15 minutes away from the famous Kanmon Bridge that connects Japan’s islands of Honshu and Kyushu. The 2 1/2-hour trip was made on a charter bus from Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Iwakuni.

Housing spring cleanup dropoff service Friday, April 1 through Friday, April 29. NASWI PPV residents may bring large, bulky, unwanted household items (furniture, large appliances, etc.) for drop-off to the Recycle Center. Exceptions (items not accepted): Refrigerators/freezers, paint or any kind of hazardous material, tires, and propane bottles. Hours for dropoff: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday throughout April. Proof of residency required.

Cougars make Seaview Trail shine

Have you taken a walk recently down the Seaview Trail that runs behind the Nor’wester? If so, you may now notice it is free of unsightly trash and debris. On Saturday, March 12, the Cougars of Electronic Attack Squadron 139 wrangled their way through thorny bushes, dodged snakes and spiders, handled shards of glass and in the process, improved the quality of life at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.
