NAS firefighters rescue stranded man

Navy Region Northwest Fire and Emergency Technical Rescue Services were requested July 31 to rescue a 26-year-old man out of a precarious situation after he had fallen from the edge of a cliff near Coupeville, Wash. Federal Firefighters from Fire Station 71 on Ault Field worked with Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue in the early morning hours to rescue the man who was stranded at the base of a cliff after a fall of some 70 feet. After 500 Command Central Whidbey Fire Chief Chad Michaels made the call at 1:25 a.m., Battalion Chief Sean Merrill, Fire Capt. Daylon Sweeney, firefighters Dave Hanson, Jonathan Crow, Ian Walton and Kevin Paggao responded to the emergency, reaching the scene at 2:06 a.m.

Garudas compete with midway fun

As the Garudas of Electronic Attack Squadon (VAQ) 134 reached the midpoint of their deployment to Bagram, Afghanistan, the MWR Committee recently took charge with a series of events to help break up the daily routine. Known as the “Garuda Olympics,” the events consisted of a series of competitions and culminated with a squadron barbeque and a pie toss raffle where Sailors nominated the people they felt would most benefit from catching a pie in the face. The Olympics drew nearly 50 members of the squadron into heated competition in both individual and team events and provided a much needed boost to morale as the squadron entered the hottest month of the Bagram summer.

Sea Cadets get advanced training at NAS Whidbey

United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC) members visited Naval Air Station Whidbey Island for two weeks of airman training, July 19-30. USNSCC is a Department of the Navy program designed for young adults, ages 13 to 17, to learn about life in the naval forces in a military-style environment while still providing a safe setting.

Whidbey SAR makes two weekend civilian rescues

When you add up clear skies, warm weather and mountain hikers, Murphy’s Law says something is bound to happen and it did the weekend of July 31 – twice. NAS Whidbey Island’s Search and Rescue crew was called for two late night rescues involving a 15-year-old female climber Aug. 1 on Mount Baker and a 32-year old male who fell while hiking Liberty Mountain near Darrington, Wash.

Attack Wing leadership changes

The command of Electronic Attack Wing, U.S. Pacific Fleet will change, Aug. 7, as Capt. Thomas A. Slais, Jr. relieves Capt. Bradley Russell in a ceremony at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. Russell led the beginning of the VAQ community’s transition from EA-6B Prowler to EA-18G Growler, accepting new aircraft and leading the effort to make VAQ-129, the Fleet Replacement Squadron, ready for EA-18G training. He also directed the execution of $240 million for aircrew and maintenance training, flight and maintenance simulators, and military construction renovation projects.

VAQ-129 Prowler 907 makes final flight

A Navy EA-6B Prowler from Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 129 made its final flight from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in preparation for retirement July 20. The flight of Prowler 907 terminated upon arrival at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Ariz., where the 309th Aerospace and Maintenance Regeneration Group will begin the process of preparing the aircraft for reclamation and preservation.

Navy helps Whidbey seniors stay cool

There has always been a running joke that Whidbey Island has two seasons, winter and August. This year the heat wave came in July, and it’s no laughing matter when the health needs of senior citizens are at stake. With temperatures hitting 90-plus degrees at the south end of Whidbey Island, David Hollett, emergency manager for Island County, came to NAS Whidbey Island for help this week to set up a respite from the heat at The Bayview-South Whidbey Senior Center in Langley.

All girls flag football league starting

Oak Harbor Youth Football and the NAS Whidbey Island Youth Center are partnering for form the community’s very first all girls-flag football league. The league will run September through October and is open to girls ages 9 to 14. Practice begins in mid-August. The registration deadline is Aug. 15. Whidbey Sailors help children DEFY drugs

Whidbey Island Sailors are helping kids learn the dangers of drugs and alcohol through the Oak Harbor Drug Education for Youth (DEFY) program which began at Fort Casey July 13. The five-day event covered drug resistance education, team building exercises and physical fitness. This year’s motto is “Be all that you can be!” “As a youth I didn’t have anyone there for me; I needed a role model to tell me about drugs and keep me focused,” said Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class Kristopher Burris, DEFY assistant operations coordinator, with Fleet Readiness Center Northwest (FRC NW). “The DEFY program will become a positive way for me to become a role model for children.”
