NAS Whidbey Island Opens New Gamers Alley

Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island held a ribbon-cutting July 17 to commemorate the opening of its newest addition to the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) facilities: Gamers Alley in the Whidbey Entertainment Center. MWR aimed to create a venue similar to the Liberty Northwest Center — a facility for single Sailors that’s open to all Navy personnel, Department of Defense civilians and their family members

Wizards shine during inspection

Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 133s Aviation Ordnancemen recently completed their Conventional Weapons Technical Proficiency Inspection. Administered by the Electronic Attack Wing, Pacific Fleet, the inspection is five days long. It began in early June with three days of weapons loading refresher training, conducted at the Electronic Attack Weapons School, followed by a written exam and a day of practical tests.

Cougars assist typhoon relief effort

The Cougars of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 139 were among the many units from the USS Ronald Reagan Strike Group (CSG 7) that recently provided aid with the disaster relief effort on the Philippine Islands in the wake of Typhoon Fengshen. The storm caused widespread structural damage and flooding across the Philippine Islands in June, destroying homes and crops across most of the southwest Pacific island chain. One of the hardest hit areas is the island of Panay, where tens of thousands of residents were without fresh drinking water and food.

Command of VAQ-142 changes

At 10 a.m. on July 17, the NAS Whidbey Island flight line was silenced from the blast of turning engines as the Gray Wolves of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 142 bid a final farewell to Commanding Officer (CO) Cmdr. James G. Stoneman. The change of command ceremony welcomed incoming CO, Cmdr. Richard J. Meadows and Executive Officer, Cmdr. Courtney B. Smith. In a crowded hangar full of family, friends and coworkers, Stoneman said his final farewells to the men and women who served under him. He thanked all the Enlisted Sailors and Officers for truly making his command tour a “dream job” and considered them to be “true family.”

NAS Whidbey participates in DEFY Program

Sailors from Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island, Wash., organized and participated in a Drug Education for Youth (DEFY) camp at Camp and Fort Casey, June 30 to July 4. DEFY not only educates children about drugs, but promotes team-building, leadership skills, healthy living, and provides a positive influence through mentoring. Nearly 20 service members volunteered to assist in the camp, teaching 27 children, ages nine-to-12 years old, how to make the right decisions throughout their lives and thought processes to ensure they come to their best conclusion for any situation.

Yellow Jackets complete HARM exercise

The VAQ-138 Yellow Jackets recently returned from a successful High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missile shoot within the Pacific Missile Test Range located near Naval Base Ventura County, Point Mugu, Calif. While there, the crew executed a complex multi-air wing HARM Exercise that involved seven Strike Fighter squadrons and one Electronic Attack squadron, shooting a total of 10 HARM (AGM-88B) at a surface target off the coast Point Mugu, located just north of Los Angeles.

Gauntlets, USS Kitty Hawk go Guam

USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63), Carrier Air Wing 5, and embarked staff said “Sayonara” to their Japanese hosts on May 28 as Commander Task Force Seven Zero (CTF-70) got under way for its summer deployment. The Gauntlets of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 136 conducted proficiency flight operations south of Japan after wrapping up a short “port visit” to Naval Air Facility Atsugi. Soon thereafter, CTF-70 proceeded to the Guam operating area to partake in large force exercises and various unit level training.

NHOH celebrates hospital Corps birthday

Naval Hospital Oak Harbor (NHOH) held a celebration commemorating the 110th birthday of the Hospital Corps at the Officers Club on Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island, June 28. The Navy Hospital Corps was established by Congress and President William McKinley on June 17, 1898, which paid tribute to the contributions made by hospital corpsman over the years involving major conflicts of the U.S. The event featured a formal ceremony and a buffet-style dinner followed by music and dancing.

Yellow Jackets successfully complete TSTA

The Yellow Jackets of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 138 and the rest of the Carrier Air Wing CVW 9 team have returned home from a recent three-week detachment off the coast of Southern California in which they participated with the crew of the USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) in their Tailored Ship’s Training Availability. TSTA is part of the USS John C. Stennis’ scheduled Fleet Readiness Training Plan in preparation for their coming deployment, and it was the first opportunity for CVW-9 to once again integrate themselves into the carrier strike group team.

Gray Wolves awarded Safety ‘S’

The Gray Wolves of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 142 were awarded the Chief of Naval Operations Safety ‘S’ on April 5. This is the second consecutive year that VAQ-142 has received this prestigious award and marks the fourth Safety ‘S’ the squadron has received since 2001. The Safety ‘S’ is presented annually to the squadron with the most proactive approach to safety, both on and off duty. VAQ-142 has sustained operational excellence, combining mission success with exemplary safety performance.
