Do I go to work when it snows?

The life expectancy of snowmen isn't long on Whidbey Island, as snow doesn't stick around too long. But know what to do when it does snow and be careful of black ice.

It’s time to remember what to do when you wake up, realize it snowed overnight and wonder if you have to go to work today. Whidbey Island can get a light dusting or 10-plus inches, depending on where you live. It’s been known to snow here as early as mid-November and late as March.

Your safety is important. Slipping and sliding on icy roads in the dark during blizzard conditions is the last thing any employer or your supervisor would ask.

You need to have some basic information ready available at home, in your wallet or in your car, not at the office or in the work center so you can find out what’s going on before you head out.

- Your duty office phone number

- The NAS Whidbey Island information line, (360) 279-1080

- The NAS Whidbey Island web address: http://www.naswi.navy.mil

You can also watch KOMO 4, KING 5, KIRO 7 and KCPQ 13 on Television; or tune to KWDB 1110 AM (Oak Harbor), KAFE 104.3 FM (Bellingham), KBRC 1430 AM (Mount Vernon), KLKI 1340 (Anacortes), KIRO 710 AM (Seattle), KOMO 1000 AM (Seattle) and KMPS 94.1 FM (Seattle).

During icy and snowy conditions, Langley Blvd. will be closed to through traffic; its steep grade makes it very difficult to navigate safely.

Charles Porter Gate will remain open around the clock for two-way traffic.

Traffic patterns at remaining Ault Field and Seaplane Base gates are subject to change, sometimes without prior notice. Speed limits on Charles Porter Ave. and Torpedo Rd. will also be reduced.

Security personnel will be on duty to help ensure your safety. Please give them the courtesy and respect they deserve.
