Garudas stay fit in Afghanistan

Recently Garudas of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 134 overcame the 4,900-foot elevation and strong winds in Afghanistan and made the fall physical fitness assessment (PFA) a success.
Garudas prepared for the physical challenge by conducting daily workouts in the base gym and running along the perimeter roads. The dedication and hard work paid off as the Garuda Sailors committed themselves to staying fit while continuing to support combat missions as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Despite the high altitude, challenging winds and cool temperatures, Information Systems Technician Seaman(AW) Arik Eisenhardt and Navy Counselor 1st Class(AW/SW) Jason Lewis competed for first place on the 1.5-mile run. Finishing with an outstanding time of 8:39, Eisenhardt won the race by only the narrowest of margins.
The squadron completed the pushups and sit-ups in the Garuda maintenance “clamshell” adjacent to the flight line then transitioned to the north perimeter road for the run.
Personnel Specialist 2nd Class(AW/SW) Darryl Thomas, squadron assistant command fitness leader cites the attitude of Garudas for ensuring that they are mission capable and ready for all aspects of their jobs.
The workout routine developed on deployment not only resulted in a successful PFA, but also improved the command’s health and readiness.
