Lancers enjoy liberty in Manama, Bahrain

In mid November, Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 131 Lancers and the USS Abraham Lincoln Strike Group (CSG 9) enjoyed a well-deserved 4-day liberty in Manama, Bahrain following a few long and strenuous weeks supporting Operations Enduring Freedom and New Dawn.

The city of Manama offered Lancer Sailors a chance to experience the local Arab culture. MWR organized several tours and activities for the entire strike group including the Cultural Tour, a visit to the Tree of Life and a chance to swim with the dolphins. The Cultural Tour included visits to the Grand Mosque, Bahrain Museum, Bahrain World Trade Center, a camel farm owned by the King of Bahrain, the Bahrain-Saudi Bridge and the Bahrain Fort.

“Overall, I would rate the tours as ten out of ten. I would highly recommend the tour to anyone interested in learning about this area of the world,” said Aviation Electrician’s Mate 2nd Class Richard Alexander.

The local cuisine, which consisted mainly of grilled meat, curry dishes and bread with humus, gave the Lancers a break from the ship’s food.

“The local food was unique and the restaurants provided us a perfect setting to enjoy each other’s company,” said Lt. Robert Talbot, a newcomer to the squadron.

A few Lancers explored the many markets, known as “soukes,” to shop and experience the bartering environment. They offered items such as custom suits, shawls, and genuine Bahraini souvenirs.

“The shopping was great. I was able to buy exciting and different gifts for friends and family back home,” said Yeoman Seaman Rachel Bowman.

Most importantly, Bahrain provided the Lancers with a much-needed chance to unwind and bond after a successful month at sea conducting combat operations. A few Lancers even participated in Go Kart racing offered by MWR.

“It was a really fun time,” said Aviation Machinist’s Mate 1st Class Eric Wiedemann. “It was great to be out and enjoying each other’s company away from the ship.”

Other Lancers took the time to slow down and enjoy the sun next to the hotel pools.

“It was just great to sit around with your closest friends by the pool and rest,” said Lt. j. g. Patrick Bell. “The weather was perfect. We felt really rejuvenated afterwards.”

Overall, Bahrain was a great port call, giving the Lancers their first visit to a Middle Eastern country during this deployment. The brief time spent in Bahrain allowed every member of the Lancer team to recharge their batteries. While leaving port was bittersweet, the Lancers are excited and ready to focus on combat operations until the next port call.
