Lancers see deployment on horizon

The VAQ-131 Lancers went aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) in July for Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX). The squadron, with Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2 executed both Unit Level Training and Large Force Exercises in preparation for their upcoming deployment.
“COMPTUEX was a superb opportunity for the Lancer Team to fully integrate with CVW-2 and the Abe Lincoln Strike Group,” said Cmdr. Tom Huerter, Lancer Commanding Officer. “As we complete workups, we stand ready to proceed West on deployment and look forward to the challenges that lie ahead.”
Members of the squadron were put to the test during the 18-day exercise by Strike Force Training Pacific. This team was aboard the USS Lincoln to assess the carrier’s ability to meet certain metrics, proving the carrier and air wing’s combat readiness.
Not only were the Lincoln and Carrier Air Wing Two evaluated, but so too were Destroyer Squadron Nine and the USS Cape St. George. With the successful completion of COMPTUEX, the strike group has been certified for “blue water” or open-ocean operations.
“All of our maintainers, administrative personnel, intel folks and aircrew have worked incredibly hard the past seven months throughout our work-up cycle,” said Lt. William Carson. “This was a chance for us to continue that hard work in preparation for deployment.”
The Strike Group did various evolutions aimed at bringing all components together as one to accomplish a common goal. By simulating scenarios they may encounter while in combat, the Sailors were given a chance to work together real-time; building both confidence and proficiency.
“Our ability to work closely with other squadrons and Strike Group assets directly affects our ability to accomplish our goals as a team,” said Lt. Tim Shilling. “That close working relationship really begins here at COMPTUEX and will go a long way towards our future success in combat.”
While the Lancers are constantly grooming their weapon systems and furthering the experience level of all squadron members, another important aspect of the exercise was preparing the squadron for an extended period of shipboard life.
“Life on the boat is much simpler than life ashore,” said Lt. Zach Simms. “Everything you need is a short walk or a ladder well away. Your options are certainly limited in some regards, but there is a unique satisfaction you get out here being away from the hassles of normal everyday life. A Chipotle on board would be nice though!”
With the Composite Training Unit Exercise finishing up on Friday, Aug. 13th the Lancers, as well as the rest of the Strike Group 9 team, look eagerly ahead to their upcoming deployment.
“We’ve been training and prepping for this for the past seven months,” said Lt. Casey Harrison. “We’re ready and eager to get into the fight and contribute to the effort.”
