Local Marine meets university board of trustees

U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Laura Martinez was among a select few to testify before Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s board of trustees, March 25. Martinez, who works at the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit (CNATTU), Whidbey, is nearing completion of her Master of Aeronautical Science degree and maintains a perfect 4.0 GPA.
The all-expense-paid meeting with the Board of Trustees was held at The Shores Resort meeting room, adjacent to Embry-Riddle headquarters in Daytona Beach, Fla. Embry-Riddle is in the early phases of preparing for institutional reaccreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
The single most important part of the reaccreditation process is the development of a Quality Enhancement Plan, which requires full participation by all of the constituent groups at Embry-Riddle campuses.
Martinez answered questions and provided critical information about her experiences regarding Embry-Riddle’s quality of academics, leadership and administration. Her input is an essential component in the creation of a university-transforming initiative, one designed to significantly enhance student learning.
Marty Smith, Executive Vice President of Embry-Riddle Worldwide Campus shared his personal thanks.
“The presentations by the worldwide campus were very well received by the Board of Trustees,” said Smith. “Laura did very well and all were pleased with her professionalism and performance. We know it was an effort to come to Daytona and take time out of her busy family and work schedule but it was appreciated by all.”
It is anticipated that the initiative will greatly add to the strength and outstanding reputation of the university.
After the meeting, Martinez visited the main Embry-Riddle campus and interacted with the resident students, staff, and instructors.
“It is difficult to fathom just how massive the university is until you actually visit there in person,” she said. As a bonus, she had the chance to visit the bookstore and purchase clothing and other goodies bearing the Embry-Riddle logo.
If meeting with the Board of Trustees and touring the campus were not significant enough, Martinez was also recently selected as a recipient of the prestigious “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges” award for 2010. The award was given in recognition of her outstanding merit and accomplishments as a student of Embry-Riddle. Her biography will be published in the 2010 directory, and she will automatically be entered in a drawing for scholarships worth up to $5,000.
Martinez is currently serving as an instructor with CNATTU on board NAS Whidbey Island. She exudes confidence in everything that she does and exhibits the highest level of commitment to the Marine Corps, air station, CNATTU and the university.
