‘Navy Family Team’ marches for special cause

Parents love to talk about the trials and tribulations of having and raising kids. Unfortunately, it isn’t easy for parents of children who were born prematurely, born with a birth defect, or who have suffered an infant loss to find other parents who understand what they are going through.
On March 20, Chief Aviation Electronics Technician Stephen Stewart, assigned to Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit (CNATTU) Whidbey Island and his “Navy Family Team” joined forces at Windjammer Park in Oak Harbor. His team was comprised of local and international Sailors and their families. Together, they raised $1,430 to help fund research in an effort to give all babies a healthy start in life.
“Every day 1,500 babies are born prematurely and this is a great way to generate money for research and education,” said Stewart. “It’s also a great opportunity to get together with people within the community that are going through similar situations in their own families.”
March of Dimes gives hope to the more than half a million babies born too soon each and every year. The money that is raised supports programs in the community that help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies. The organization also improves the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
They carry out their mission through research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies’ lives. March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against the threats to their health.
“The Navy is my extended family and I greatly appreciate all the support and words of encouragement during this challenging time,” said Stewart. “My son and wife are doing fine and I cannot wait until we’re able to bring my little boy home.”
