Sailors enjoy a taste of home

Groups of hungry Sailors gathered in Barracks 2 and 8 on Oct. 4 and 18 to enjoy the simple pleasures of making a tasty meal for themselves.
It’s all part of Potless Cooking in the Barracks, a quarterly program that makes a stop at every barracks on base to help single Sailors and Marines enjoy home cooking. The menu of the evening was turkey cutlets and stuffing, with a dash of cranberries for a little extra zing.
The program is free of charge. Liberty Coordinator Stephanie Oppor provides all the supplies needed, including ingredients, cookware, utensils, salad, refreshments and dessert. She stands by to assist, but the program is hands-on, with participants responsible for whipping up their own individual dish. Sailors simply mix, stir, pour and bake their way to a mouth-watering creation.
After they’re through preparing the meal, they enjoy the fruits of their efforts with a sit-down dinner. Besides a fully tummy, barracks residents have learned to create a meal for themselves, simple one-dish recipes they can easily bring back to their rooms.
The Potless Cooking program is open to all Liberty-eligible Sailors and Marines and runs through March; Barracks 11 plays host to the next class held on Nov. 1 at 5:30 p.m. Call Oppor in the Liberty office with questions on potless cooking or any other Liberty program at 257-3309.
