Scorpion Sailor takes to skies

Airman Sefcik gives a thumbs-up as he's ready to launch. Prior to this flight he had only flown in airliners.

VAQ-132 is always looking for ways to reward its Sailors for a job well done, and Airman Eric Sefcik is the most recent beneficiary.

The Orientation Flight Program allows top-performing enlisted members to compete for a flight in an EA-6B Prowler.

Once identified, the Sailor completes a flight physical, an abbreviated Aviation Physiology/Water Survival course, as well as an ejection seat brief and flight gear fitting at the squadron level.

When the big day comes, the lucky individual is briefed thoroughly on safety and general procedures, gets strapped in and goes flying in a squadron aircraft. The intent is to show the Sailor how aircrew operate on a daily basis, and to give them a little taste of what they’ve worked so hard to support behind the scenes.

Sefcik, recently named Plane Captain of the Quarter for VAQ-132, was selected by his supervisors to participate in the program.

“His enthusiasm and professionalism set him apart from his peers,” said Lt. Rich Winstead, line division officer. “It was an honor to nominate him for this flight.”

“I was out launching a jet one day and the maintenance officer, Lt. Cmdr. Ware, asked me if I wanted to go flying,” remembers Sefcik on his selection. He says he’s always been interested in flying, but just doesn’t have the eyesight. “I just had to jump at the chance,” he added.

When Sefcik finally saw his name on the flight schedule, he was excited to see he would get to fly on a low altitude training hop, and on not just any route, but the VR1355. Widely known as “the million dollar route” for the breathtaking scenery it offers of the Cascades. Flying the VR1355 is a treat to experienced aircrew, not to mention a first-timer.

Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Randolph Pierson, had the pleasure of accompanying Sefcik in the back seat, while Lt. Cmdr. Dave Bartell, pilot, and Lt. Pete Nelson, ECMO1, completed the crew. As Sefcik boarded the jet, his fellow Line personnel offered words of encouragement, from “Don’t puke!” to “Try not to pass out!”

Undaunted by these naysayers, he bravely strapped into Scorpion 501 for what would be an exhilarating two hours. At the conclusion of his flight, an elated Sefcik stepped down from the jet with his lunch intact.

“That was incredible! I was in awe the whole time,” he exclaimed.

To those hoping to earn themselves a ride in the mighty Prowler, Sefcik offers, “Just work hard and you’ll get noticed. Let someone know you’re interested.”

The Scorpions have already selected their next candidate for the Orientation Flight Program, Blue Jacket of the Quarter, Aviation Machinist Mate 3rd Class Yadian Pandiello.

Complete with his training requirements and waiting to be scheduled for the flight, Pandiello said, “I’m ready to do it. Bring it on!”

VAQ-132 believes the program provides a great incentive for its Sailors to strive for, as well as promoting a little healthy competition.

As Sefcik and soon Pandiello should agree, it’s definitely the thrill of a lifetime!
