Shadowhawks complete workups

The Shadowhawks of Electronic Attack Squadron 141 have returned to NAS Whidbey Island to rest after their last phase of work-ups.
“We’re back to recuperate, set our minds straight and get our jets in ‘ship-shape’ condition,” said Maintenance Officer, Lt. Cmdr. Jeffrey Todd.
The Shadowhawks, attached to Carrier Air Wing Eight (CVW-8), completed an eight-month-long work-up schedule that included three carrier detachments aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and two detachments to NAS Fallon, Nev.
“Our training objectives ranged from pilot carrier qualification to electronic jamming analysis to large-scale strike force exercises,” said VAQ-141’s Operations Officer, Lt. Cmdr. Vinnie Johnson. “Our Sailors have worked long, difficult hours and been away from their families sporadically during these past eight months.”
Safety Officer, Lt. Cmdr. Michael O’Leary, referring to the troops who keep VAQ-141 flying, said, “We’ve maintained an excellent reputation as an efficient, well-prepared and, most of all, safe squadron.”
New Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Paul McKeon, has taken the helm and steered the Shadowhawks in the direction of greatness. He took command five months into work-ups and led the Shadowhawks through a successful and productive, yet demanding work-up schedule.
“He’s just what we needed,” said Lt. Cmdr. Charles Hubbard. “He really stepped up to the plate and hit big.”
McKeon had equally kind words to say about his troops. “The hard work and dedication our Sailors maintain every day makes my job that much easier,” he said. “It’s a pleasure to work with such exceptional Sailors. I have no doubt that we’re ready.”
The men and women of VAQ-141 are beginning preparations for the long time away from home. Family and financial responsibilities top the pre-deployment “to-do” list.
“I still have a lot of things to do,” said ITSA Matt Czernics, “but I’ll be ready to finally to do my job and support my shipmates.”
To ease the pre-deployment process, especially for those with families, VAQ-141 held a Pre-deployment Fair in early July. Information was shared on coping with family separation, how to organize and plan financial responsibilities and help for spouses on what to expect while they are separated.
“My wife really enjoyed it. She’s really great and supportive. Hopefully this will make the transition a little easier,” recalled AM3 Joshua Bright.
Following work-ups, the Shadowhawks are ready for their operational deployment. VAQ-141 will depart early next month in support of the continuing global war on terror.
“We’ve trained and trained for so long now,” said Lt. Cmdr. Robert Michael, “we can finally put our training to use to make a difference. I’m ready, and I know our troops are too.”
