VAQ-132 baker honors Black History

Culinary Specialist 3rd Class Brandon Vincent West recently used his prodigal skills in food design at Naval Air Station Whidbey’s Nimitz Galley in honor of Black History Month.
West crafted a cake representing the Tuskegee Airmen, the first black pilots of America. The cake, measured to be the length of a human arm, was a proud moment for Supply Department, and the baker himself.
When asked how he felt taking on the opportunity to represent his racial ties through culinary arts, there was no hesitance in his answer.
“I was absolutely honored,” said West. “It’s good to remember the people of the past who fought in the military and changed our history.”
“It helped me better appreciate those who fought for our future. It was very fun and enlightening reading up on the airmen,” said West, explaining that during the pre-production of the cake, he had to do a lot of research and use reference materials just for the design itself.
A member of the VAQ-132 Scorpions, West has only been in the Navy two years. Despite never having any culinary background before the military, he is showing tremendous promise in his work prowess. Already he has made cakes for several events, including change-of-command ceremonies, and re-enlistments. His favorite creation so far has been a change-of-command cake for VAQ-137 that showed both commanding officers saluting the American flag.
Married and father of two, West has his hands full balancing work, home and self-discovery. Before the Navy, he struggled with two jobs; neither matched or made use of his artistic abilities. Finding time for college was also not possible and a bright future for his family was dimming, until he decided to enlist.
Since then his horizon has opened up to a vast range of opportunities offered by the Navy. With discipline and the willingness to accept challenges, much like the Tuskegee Airmen, his future looks bright.
Although West has his plate full serving his country, attending college for graphic design and supporting his family, he still makes time for cakes. Last year he won first place in the regional Iron Chef competition in Everett with his “Autumn” cake.
He’s already planning for this year’s Iron Chef competition to he held at the NAS Whidbey Island galley April 2.
