VQ-1 names year’s top intelligence specialist
Patrol Squadron (VQ) 1 recently named Intelligence Specialist 1st Class Jason Bovetz as the squadron’s Intelligence Specialist Sailor of the Year for directly assisting in the successful completion of over one hundred missions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Commander Fifth Fleet assignments.
According to the award citation, Bovetz, a Washington state native, provided in-flight aircrews with over 800 hours of real-time flight-following coverage, maintained vigilant access to multiple theater intelligence databases and kept a keen eye on relevant all-source intelligence reporting, all of which “greatly enhanced crew situational awareness.”
“My accomplishments are not magnificent or unattainable feats of heroism,” said Bovetz during a recent awards presentation held by Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 10. “Simply put, they are the results of hard work.”
The intelligence Bovetz organizes and forms into reports is used throughout the world, contributing greatly to overall battle-space awareness for Carrier Strike Groups and Commanders throughout the Central Command’s Area of Responsibility.
Intelligence Specialists are directly responsible for organizing, interpreting and disseminating collected intelligence information vital to strategic situations throughout the world. Currently, in no other operating area is this more vital to mission success than the Middle East.
“Preparing a mission for each of our crews takes a great deal of attention to detail,” Bovetz said. “We ensure that the aircrews go flying with whatever information they need in order to accomplish their goals smartly and safely.”
VQ-1, a fleet air reconnaissance squadron, is made up of over five hundred personnel and continuously operates in a pre- and post-deployment environment. The squadron rotates combat reconnaissance crews that conduct a constant global mission and provide real-time transmission of critical intelligence to national and theater commanders.
