Navy Cyber Forces (NCF) and Naval Network Warfare Command (NNWC) named Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) 1st Class (NAC/AW) Nolan D. Workman the 2010 Sea Sailor of the Year at a March 18 ceremony held at Joint Expeditionary Base, Little Creek, Norfolk, V.

Workman, a recent addition to the instructor staff at Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit (CNATTU) Whidbey Island traveled to Naval Station Little Creek March 15 to compete for the NCF and NNWC Sea Sailor of the Year honors.

The rigorous three-day selection process required Workman and nine other top candidates from NNWC’s worldwide commands to participate in physical fitness training, team building exercises and individual oral boards.

Workman said that he was impressed with the high caliber of the Sailors he competed against. “There are so many Sailors along the way who could have easily taken my place; many going way beyond the call of duty each and every day,” said Workman.

“My selection was a testament to the teamwork at (NIOC) Misawa and the hard work of the Sailors I have had the privilege to lead and serve with.”

Workman joined the Navy Sept. 2, 1992, and after graduating from RTC Great Lakes, he attended the Basic Chinese Mandarin course at the Defense Language Institute.

His subsequent tours have taken him to Hawaii, Maryland and the United Kingdom, where he has served aboard U.S. and Allied surface and subsurface combatants in various operational assignments.

Most recently, he served as an EP-3 Special Operator supervisor based out of Misawa, Japan before arriving at CNATTU as an EP-3 Special Operator instructor in February 2010.

“Petty officer Workman is a great addition to the staff here at CNATTU Whidbey Island,” said Naval air Crewmen Avionics Chief Jason Cobb. “It will be great having a Sailor of his caliber training today’s Sailors for tomorrow’s mission.”

This month, Workman will join five other finalists and compete for the Fleet Forces Command Sea Sailor of the Year. The winner of that competition will be recognized by Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Gary Roughead in Washington D.C. and meritoriously promoted to chief petty officer.
