Wizards return from Nellis

The Wizards of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 133 recently concluded a productive two-week detachment to
Nellis Air Force Base, in Las Vegas Nev. The event is the Air Forces premier training exercise that takes place on
the 15,000-square mile Nevada Test and Training range, located north of Las Vegas.
While taking part in this exercise, the Wizards got the opportunity to train with multi-national forces on many levels.
This included NATO forces based out of Germany, as well as Turkish, Brazilian, and even Swedish aviators.
The Swedish Air Force pilots were a particular surprise, since they arrived flying the JAS-39 Gripen fighter. This
marked the first time these aircraft were to fly in Red Flag.
The Squadron’s main objective in traveling to Nellis was to train with Air Force assets, as well as multi-national forces,
in a simulated wartime environment. VAQ-133s EA-6Bs flew two sorties a day in conjunction with numerous assets
as part of overall strike packages launched to defeat a tenacious enemy.
The exercise provided great training for Wizard aircrew and maintainers in conducting high tempo flight operations.
Training exercises such as these provide valuable lessons, as the Wizards prepare for their upcoming deployment.
The Wizard’s demanding schedule during Red Flag allowed the Squadron to complete 10 Prowler Weapons and Tactics
Program qualifications, as well as assume the overall lead on two missions, none of which would have been possible
without the incredible effort put forth by the Wizard maintenance personnel.
Working in heat that routinely eclipsed 100 degrees, maintainers logged long hours to keep the aircraft flying.
Hard work from the Maintenance Department, paid-off as the Wizard’s accomplished a 100 percent sortie completion
rate for the entire exercise.
